Elbrus is 5,642 meters above sea level — a volcano, the highest peak in Russia and Europe, and part of the “Seven Summits” and “Seven Volcanic Summits” programs. It’s an excellent choice as a first high-altitude peak. Expeditions run year-round thanks to well-developed infrastructure.

The route isn’t technically difficult, but Elbrus is a tough and fair mountain — it often throws surprises your way and tests your willpower and intention.

You’ll need solid physical fitness: long approaches, a night summit push, and extended time working at altitude. From the south side, Elbrus has great infrastructure — you can rent all necessary gear, use cable cars, stay at a high-altitude hut, and even take a snowcat (ratrak) up to ~5,100 m.

There’s also an option to climb TWO summits on July 15 — July 23, 2026. This program is for people with prior climbing experience and requires a serious training level.

We recommend preparing with our training program
Elbrus South (5,642 m) is rated Grade 1B. It’s not considered a highly technical alpine objective — it’s a hiking route without complex technical sections. Great for a first high-mountain experience. At the same time, it requires serious physical and mental preparation.

You can roughly split the trip into two parts — a trekking phase and a high-altitude phase. In the first part, we sleep in a hotel and do radial day hikes with light packs. The second part happens at altitude: we live in a hut at 3,900 m and do acclimatization climbs with light packs.

A summit push with a snowcat takes 6–8 hours to reach the top; descent takes 2–3 hours. Without a snowcat: 12–14 hours up, 3–4 hours down.

For summit day we carry a small pack with only essentials — a thermos, snacks, a personal first-aid kit, spare mittens/gloves. On the summit, summer temperatures can drop to −10°C, and rarely to −20°C.
Acclimatization, the observatory
After breakfast we drive to Terskol and hike up to the observatory at 3,200 m. It’s a very scenic viewpoint with a wide panorama of Elbrus, Cheget, Shkhelda, Ushba, Donguzorun, and the “Seven” glacier.

On the way back we stop at the rental shop if needed and pick up gear for the ascent. Return to the hotel and get ready to move to the high camp.
Day 3
Distance: 12 km round trip
Elevation gain: 1,100 m
Time on trail: 7 hours
Acclimatization, Mt. Cheget
After breakfast, we do an acclimatization hike on Mt. Cheget up to 3,000–3,100 m. From the top you get an amazing view of the Baksan Gorge, the village of Terskol, and of course the double-headed Elbrus — visible from one side — and from the other side: Donguzorun–Cheget–Karabashi, Kogutai, and Nakra. And on Cheget we’ll definitely try the local chebureki — they’re legendary.

On the way we check and adjust gear. On the descent we walk part of the route and take the cable car for part of it.
Day 2
Time on trail: 7 hours
Elevation gain: 1,100 m
Distance: 9 km round trip

Day 8
Summit push
Early wake-up and departure. For those going on foot, the start is around 21:00 the previous day. For those taking the snowcat to the “Kozya Shelf,” departure is at 02:00. On the way down you can also take the snowcat. The decision is made on the mountain.

Walking distance (full on-foot ascent): 12 km
Walking distance (with snowcat up): 5 km
Time (full on-foot ascent): 16 hours
Time (with snowcat): 10–12 hours

* For the TWO-summit route:
Distance without snowcat — 17 km
Distance with snowcat — 10 km
Day 7
Distance: 5–12 km round trip
Elevation gain: 1,900 m
Time: 10–16 hours
Rest day
Rest in the hut before the ascent.
Today we take it slow: recover, eat well, drink plenty, and tune in for the night start and summit push. A calm day and an early bedtime.
Day 6
After breakfast we climb to 4,800−5,100 m. We reach the famous Pastukhov Rocks — you’ll really feel the altitude here; it will get tough, but this is essential for strong acclimatization before summit day. From Pastukhov Rocks you get a huge view of Elbrus' south slope, the Baksan Valley, and other peaks of the Caucasus Range — truly powerful.
Day 5
High-altitude phase. Acclimatization, Pastukhov Rocks, “snowcat shelf”
Distance: 8 km
Elevation gain: 800–1,100 m
Time on trail: 6–8 hours
Move to high camp, acclimatization, snow & ice training
After breakfast we head to high camp. We take the cable car up to Garabashi Station (3,880 m) and check into an alpine hut. It has everything you need: rooms with beds, a cozy kitchen with board games, and a toilet.

Then we go for an acclimatization climb to 4,300–4,400 m. On the way down we do snow-and-ice training — learn to use alpine gear and practice key skills individually and in teams.
Day 4
Distance: 5 km
Elevation gain: 600 m
Time on trail: 6 hours
